The Green Monster

Opel first started out in the metalworking business, with its first product, a sewing machine in 1862. Later in 1886 the German company entered into the production of bicycles. The first automobile followed in 1899 and was named the “Opel Patent Motor Car, System Lutzmann”. During the year of 1901, an Opel won the Konigsstuhl Hill Climb, and the company also signed and agreement with the French car builder Darracq to produce that car under license.

Around the year of 1902, Opel went back to the drawing board and designed another car of their own that finally entered into production in 1906. By 1907, the 60 hp racing car seen above was built, and the company test and racing car driver Carl Jorns finished third in the Kaiser’s Prize Race behind the wheel with it; the car was also selected by the emperor to win the prize for the best German automobile and thereafter became the official car used for his court.

In 1913, the firm designed and built a shaft and bevel gear-driven SOHC engine much like that produced by Mercedes, in both 4-liter and 4.5-liter sizes for its Grand Prix racing car. The photos of this engine below, were found the following year in The Automobile magazine, July 9, 1914 issue, which covered Grand Prix engines and developments for the season.

Also in 1914 or earlier, it appears that the decision was made to build the Opel Rennwagen record car, with a larger four cylinder sixteen-valve engine of 12.3 liters (750 CI) that was quite similar to the Gran Prix version. It appears to have shared the same basic design with the exception of the rocker arms actuating the valves from below the valve springs.

Foundation for the Future Success

Among experts the name „Walter“ in connection with the former Austro-Hungarian Empire – before the dawn of the 20th century – stands for outstanding pioneering spirit and innovation.

Mainspring behind the company Walter was Josef Walter, who was born in 1873. In 1901 Walter already originated his own motor-bike production. During the time before World War I he was already convinced that automobiles would play a major role in future. So he charged his in-house constructors to create a passenger car at the main plant in Zatlance. After achieving Walters target they started a series of tests which all went very well.

Due to Walters principle to employ only highly qualified staff it was possible to develop an adequate vehicle out of the test car in a short time. Spurred by the quick progress Walters management announced the start of production in 1913. Due to a running production during World War I the company was able to continue its vehicle making without any restrictions in the years after war. Short after World War I they offered a sports car with highly technical acquirements. Especially the engine with its displacement of 1.544 cc, 20 HP and its overhead valve timing got much attention in the young scene. Remarkable was here the configuration of the stroke-bore-ratio with 120 mm x 64 mm – an extremely long dimensioned stroke. Responsible for a balanced temperature of the 2-cylinder engine was a liquid cooling. Leading for this modern design was Ing. Zubatý. He was appreciated with the symbol “Z” in the type designation of the car

The Walter-Zubatý 1500 – short WZ 1500 – was published in 1921. It built the foundation for the following high-performance engines which are known as WIZ respectively WIZI in Walters corporate history.

The Tour de France for automobiles was a stage race held in France from 1899 to 1986. It was a road race similar to the Mille Miglia, but unlike the legendary Italian race, it was run in different stages.

1951 Tour de France automobile was won by Pierre "Pagnibon" Boncompagni and navigator Alfred Barraquet driving the 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Touring Barchetta s/n 0078E. The race was 5 239 km and started 30 August in Nice and lasted to 12 September 1951 with arrival back in Nice. Boncompagni was from Nice and the car was borrowed from US Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti.
